My Peyronie's Symptoms

Hi ...I am a 60 year old white SOUTH AFRICAN with a history of heart disease. It started in 1987 with a heart attack AND consequent lv damage.

Vegtable showing how erectile dysfuncion works

Over the years up to now, I had a triple bypass, 12 stents, 12 pta's (balloons) and finally an ICD during 2012. Since then I have been pretty stable with a lvt of 38%.

I have been exercising 4 times a week at the gym for the past 10 years since my early permanent disability at the age of 50. I have been doing 45 minutes cardio at an average speed and average intensity as well as a full circuit. My weight is well controlled.

CURRENT MEDICATION: COZAAR 25MG 1D, CRESTOR 40MG 1D, INSPRA 25MG 1D, CARLOC 25 MG 1BD, DISPRIN CV 5MG 1D, ISORDIL 5MG SUBLINGUAL WHICH I VERY SELDOM USE, PEPLOCK 40MG 1D, OMEGA SUPREME 2D, VITAMIN K2 (mk4 and 7)1D, ALZAM 1MG 1D IN EVENING, CITALOPRAM 20MG 1D, SLOWMAG 2D.

MY MINDSET IS GOOD AND POSITIVE. EXCERSIZE PLAYS A MAJOR ROLE.

I still enjoyed good sex on average once a week with NO enhancers, up to two years ago when I noticed that my erections was GRADUALLY getting shorter and weaker than usual. NO CURVETURES. MY URINATING PRESSURE ALSO DROPPED, BUT WITH NO COMPLICATIONS.

I started to physically examine my penis and discover a hard lump on the right hand side of my penis at the back where it protrudes from the body. It seems to be around the circumference to an extent. IT IS NOT NOTICABLE AT ALL. THE FUNNY PART IS THAT IT CONSTANTLY VARIES IN SIZE WHEN I TOUCH IT TO MEASURE ...THEN SMALLER, AND THEN BIGGER. I WOULD SAY FROM 1CM TO 5MM AND VICE VERSA. IT ALSO SEEMS TO MOVE AROUND.

I lived with this but eventually consulted an urologist. They did a scan and confirm that it is Peyronie's.

THE PROGNOSIS WAS NO OPERATION/INJECTIONS DUE TO THE FAILURE RATE. HE SUGGESTED HIGH VITAMIN E DOSAGES. HE ALSO MENTIONED THAT IT WOULD EVENTUALLY BURN ITSELF OUT???

I do not know where to go and cannot find a specialist in SA THAT SPECIALIZES IN THIS. SHOULD I USE ENHANCERS JUST FOR A HARDER ERECTION??? THIS WILL BE A GREAT HELP IF IT CAN WORK.

YOUR OPINION IS APPRECIATED.

I'm very sorry to hear about your health problems but I really like and admire your attitude. Good mindset and staying physically active is always very important and not least in situations like this.

And I'm sorry to hear you have Peyronie's but it is really good news that you do not have any curvature. The big question now is… are you in the acute or stable phase? If you are in the stable phase then you will not get curvature unless you "reactivate" your Peyronie's disease, e.g. by injuring your penis during sexual intercourse. However, if you are in your acute phase the disease may still be progressing, meaning you may experience curvature in the coming weeks / months.

So under all circumstances show reasonable care when having sexual intercourse. If you erections are not firm enough you are at higher risk of buckling the penis during intercourse which could aggravate your condition. You may find these sex tips for men with Peyronie's helpful read at this stage.

Unfortunately it sound like your Urologist is not too familiar with Peyronie's disease. I though do agree with him about (especially) surgery being the last resort. I would though not go as far as saying it has high failure rate but surgery does have some serious potential side effects. And as you do not have any curvature, you should not require invasive treatment options anyway.

Recommending high dosage of Vitamin E and "wait and see" used to be the approach recommended to men with Peyronie's. This has fortunately changed. Most specialists now don't believe taking Vitamin E makes any difference though many men still do... just in case. And most believe trying some of the non-invasive treatment option early on to try to limit (and even reverse) the severity of the Peyronie's symptoms.

It is true that Peyronie's can rectify itself (or that what I suspect he means with "burn itself out"). However, it does so only in minority of cases, or estimate 5-15% of cases. Unfortunately for the rest their condition stays the same or gets worse. I personally would not advocate the "wait and see" approach. I have just heard from too many unhappy men to believe in that approach.

In your case the main issue is your erection quality. Erectile dysfunction is believed to have physical causes in 80-90% of the cases, especially in older men. Address the underlying physical problem and the erection dysfunction is addressed as well. You heart condition may play a role in your condition.

There are things you can do but these are the most common treatments for erectile dysfunction. PDE5 inhibitors like Viagra and penile vacuum pumps are the most common ones but there are other less know options, like Kegel exercises, that is worth checking out as well.

I hope this is some help but feel free to contact me anytime if you think I can be of any assistance. I wish you all the best with your treatment.

Best regards,
Birgir
